Shopping Tips For Digital Cameras By: Martin Menzies

There are now many technologies and features being incorporated in digital cameras, while this may be good for those with an interest in photography, many people just switch off. So what are the things to look for if you want to buy a digital camera? In order for you to make an educated choice, I have compiled some areas that are generally looked at when deciding. The most important question you need to ask yourself is: what sort of photography do you intend to use the camera for?

If you only want to take casual pictures of family and friends you will not need an all-singing-all-dancing model that will cost a small fortune. Unfortunately this will come down to what you can afford irrespective of what you actually want. You also have to consider the power of the computer and the printer you will be connecting it to for editing and printing needs. You may want to consider buying your camera as part of a new computer system which would probably include all the software and a printer as well. If you don't already have some proprietary image editing software then do not worry because it will usually be included when you buy a digital camera but a photo printer will have to be factored into the equation if you don't already have one.

Your printer may be fine for letters but is it up to printing photos, To improve the picture quality, you will need to increase the number of pixels that the camera has available. Although many digital cameras have an inbuilt memory, this is usually very small so an external memory card will be necessary. Storage cards come in a number of different types sometimes storing up to 32 gigabytes for those very high resolution images, hundreds, sometimes many thousands of images can be stored on these larger capacity storage cards.

Another, sometimes under-used test is just holding it to see how it feels. Look at where all the controls are and see how easy they are to find and use. A point to remember when you are looking at buying a digital camera is what type of batteries it uses because ideally they should be rechargeable, these are a great idea and over the life of the battery can save hundreds of dollars and that's also better for the environment. The LCD screen which almost every digital camera comes equipped with can be a drain on the batteries if it is large, some models have a swiveling action, which is great for viewing your pictures and taking those from awkward angles.

Often you will find that smaller compact types are only made without a viewfinder to reduce the size but include a large, by comparison, LCD screen. As functions go, the optical zoom is one of the most used and important of features on any model. Digital cameras that are only equipped with a digital zoom should be avoided as images look blurred and pixilated. If you have any sort of visual impairment then buying a model with a diopter adjustment can be a real benefit but this does not apply to screen only digital equipment. With this information, you can now figure out what you really need and want before you buy a digital camera.

Now that you have these useful tips, as a beginner you don't want to spend too much on a digital camera. Canon Powershot SX10IS is one of the best digital cameras that is affordable
with many advanced features as listed above. Check out the Canon Powershot SX10IS review.
