Horses have always been important in the human history. Horses have been with humans for transferring goods from one place to another or in the battlefield. In the modern times, we are blessed with numerous advancements in the field of technology that we have almost forgotten how these animals once have been an important part of our lives. They can be mostly found working for humans in ranches, farms, circuses and driving carriages for amusement rides. It is comforting to know that horses do play a role in our modern day lifestyle, even if it is a small and insignificant one. Men who rode horses were regarded as nobles in Rome (when they were members of the cavalry). Equestrians today refer to the people who involve themselves in several horseback sports.
In the contemporary sense, you have to be into equestrianism to be called an equestrian. This is a measure of how you ride and maneuver your horse. To be an equestrian, you can even use your horse for practical work and not just for sports and recreation. genuine equestrian will be able to use the horse in several places and not just in the sports field.
In ancient and medieval times, horses did lots of jobs. Horses found their uses in the wartime as well as the peacetime. They were used from transportation, agriculture and warfare. Equestrians belonged to the select few in Rome. Keeping an expensive horse in those ages indicated your wealth and your needlessness of performing your own menial jobs. These people belonged to the upper rungs of social hierarchy in Rome. These people were the knights. Because they got their monetary compensation from the government, they belonged to the military and at the same time had ties with the political factions.
As Rome expanded it relied on its allies for cavalry. Gradually, the equestrians lost their military prowess because they were no longer in demand. They did not engage in war anymore but their titles still remain and indicate nobility. They were rich and governed the provinces and at that time they were equal to senators.
These senators were prominent in the offices of magistrates, but they were not allowed by law to launch their own businesses and make money that way. Equestrians were allowed their own investment ventures and also to levy taxes on agricultural companies. Both these classes naturally began to oppose each other. The equestrians involved themselves in making money but the senators were not too happy about the overtaxing. Civil wars broke out and the two factions compromised with each other but their individual positions were redefined and a reformation took place.
There are popularly known for participating in equestrian sports during Olympics. Like before horse back riding is reserved for the rich. Even today horses are still expensive and prized.
