The Green Brigade By: Gregory Henshaw
Radio, television, and internet all impact our lives to such a degree that they make it hard to imagine that anyone who owns any of those products could not have heard of global warming. Lately, there has been a good deal of discussion about the topic in the press. The problem is highly debated, but if you are concerned, it is with good reason. After all, your descendants will have a rough time if predictions are true.
There are many affordable and simple ways to combat global warming. There is entirely too much emphasis placed on vehicles and appliances that are energy efficient. There are far more affordable ways to help.
One of the biggest chances that you have to help prevent global warming or lessen its impact is in your home. Make sure to turn off your electrical appliances - such as your television or computer - when you aren't using them. As an added bonus, your electricity bill will decrease, saving you money as you help out future generations.
For the easiest way to reduce your electrical input, simply turn off all the lights and other appliances in the home when you are not immediately using them. What is nice about this approach is that it is completely free and you can save yourself money! Another step involves examining your heat so instead of having your thermostat cranked up high, you may want to put on a sweater and turn the heat down. A small degree or two can greatly reduce the amount of toxins your home produces.
By getting rid of the old standard light bulbs, and replacing them with energy efficient ones, you can also help. In addition, this simple step will also be another money-saving way you can help out the environment. These bulbs can last up to two years, which is longer than the traditional ones. It might take some price shopping efforts, but you can buy these energy saving bulbs for five dollars in a multi-pack.
Even if you are a renter, as opposed to a homeowner, there are still ways that you can work to combat global warming. A knowledgeable renter will ask his landlord about fixing any windows that allow drafts in. Other things to discuss with your landlord include the hot water heater and the addition of an insulating blanket because these are environmentally friendly and may save your landlord money.
It isn't at all necessary to invest in an energy efficient vehicle in order to be environmentally friendly in your transportation methods. It could be as simple as asking yourself if you truly need to drive all the times that you do. Other alternatives to driving are walking, the carpool, and public transportation. If you can reduce the number of times you drive in a week by three, you will be having a positive effect on global warming efforts.
